Philosophy

The intent of the Elko County School District's Gifted and Talented Program is to provide an enrichment program to children who exhibit above average intellectual ability.  We strive to meet the specific learning needs of these children through a differentiated curriculum that supports, expands, and enriches the goals of a standards based education.

Curriculum

The Gifted and Talented Program curriculum is based on strategies that address student needs comprehensively through a combination of advanced/accelerated standards based learning and enrichment.  The program strives to develop competence in the use of modern technology, enhance creative and critical thinking ability, increase high level research skills, improve independent study habits, and promote open-ended problem solving.  The curriculum structure encourages self-initiated and self-directed learning and growth while the content includes more elaborate, complex, and in-depth study of major ideas, problems, and themes.

The Gifted and Talented Program curriculum not only adheres to the Nevada State Educational Standards, but also challenges the students to go beyond the basic competencies for success.

Delivery of services to the gifted and talented students include traditional pull-out programs, cluster grouping in the regular classroom, honors classes in the junior high, and honors and advanced placement classes in the high schools.
